Today was a horrifying experience.
My first taste of this bitter war.
I was on leave with my other comrades in Stalingrad.
Early morning, rumors were going around that Germans were heading towards our position here at
Stalingrad. I personally did not believe them.
But, around noon, we were overrun by them.
All there was to be seen was utmost destruction.
I tried to run out of the bar I was having my afternoon meal in, but a grenade explosion threw me to my back.
I have never experienced anything like it before!
My ears were ringing and I took a small piece of shrapnel to my hand.
The next thing I knew I was on my feet and half consciously running and taking some supplies out of my box to help stop my pain.
I never was a man for war, and now I'm sure that I want this war over as soon as possible.
I don't think I can handle experiences like this again.
